Sex Advice for Visitors to Zika Areas

For a while, it has been known that the Zika virus can be sexually transmitted. Because of this, new recommendations have been put forth by the World Health Organization to all countries. These recommendations include that traveler’s, both male and female, practice safe sex, or abstinence for a minimum of six months after traveling to Zika prone areas.
These recommendations follow the evidence that has been introduced. This current evidence shows that males can transmit Zika to females, women can transmit the virus to males, and the current understanding that the virus remains active in semen longer than what was originally thought. Areas of concern that have had reported Zika cases include South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Miami.
Travelers to these areas should definitely take the World Health Organization’s recommendation to heart in efforts to avoid the complications of this very serious virus.
